Evaluation - In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

For our music video we looked at a number of Grime artists videos to get some inspiration. However we wanted our video to be original so we didn't want to copy the other videos we have watched. Having looked at the Tinie Tempah video " Written in the stars" we liked the idea of doing a performance shot which showed a lot of the city. We did this by filming on Hulme Bridge; Jermaine is stood looking over the bridge performing his verse.
We also looked at Devlins' video London City, he uses a lot of establishing shots of the city. In his video he speeds up these shots. We decided to do one of these shots off Hulme bridge of the traffic. We sped up the shot, we believe it looks very professional. It adds to the effect of our video because we wanted it to have a "gritty" and it symbolises city life. We also looked at other videos of the same genre, we gained some ideas of how we wanted our video to look but we tried to make our project original. Most videos of this genre have a fast cute rate, so we thought we should also stick with this trait.

One way in which our video breaks away from the conventions of these types of music videos is the way we did the editing. We made our shots fade into one another which most videos of this genre don't really do. The reason for this is usually because their songs are most of the time very fast paced so the fading wouldn't necessarily work.

Also with our video we used a shot where Ivor disappears. Him and Jermaine are sat on the wall talking and then he just disappears from the shot. This symbolises the fact that Ivor is no longer alive. We also use this special effect again when Micheal meeting Ivor and he disappears. We believe this makes our video original because its an effect that is very powerful and all the videos we have looked at do not use this.

Also in the song it mentions being stabbed, so we felt that we needed to add some kind of narrative to the footage. We filmed a hooded male standing behind a wall waiting for Jermaine to come round the corner. We did not use any props of knives as this wasn't allowed, but we believe the scene looks quiet realistic.

Research into CD Covers

Here are a few examples of CD covers that we have been looking at. We are currently in the process of making the front of our CD Cover. All we need to do now is take a few more pictures so that we can do some more covers for the back and inside pages. We want our pictures to match the theme of the song so as the song is not particularly a happy one, the colors are not going to be extreamly bright and powerful.

Update on our music video

Our group has now been able to virtually finish editing the music video. We have been able to get the footage we wanted, and make the video as good as we possibly could. We have also found out how to do a certain effect we wanted which has now made our video look professional. What we wanted to do was get a shot of both Ivor and Jermaine talking, and as they were talking we wanted Ivor to disappear from the shot. What we discovered was that if we overlapped two separate shots one of Ivor in the shot and one without him, then we could easily get the effect we wanted.

Reseach into magazine adverts

Here are some examples of the research we have been doing into magazine adverts. We have been looking at numerous adverts so that we can get some inspiration to use on our own advert. We want ours to keep in theme with the genre of the song. Also we want the advert to stand out because if it was actually going into a magazine we want t to catch a persons eye, so they can go out and buy the single.

CD cover analysis

This is the Cd cover of Tinie Tempahs new album "Disc-Overy". The picture on this cover is extremely powerful. The colours are bold which catches the eye of a consumer; they also add to the intensity of the picture. The dark colours also add to the mysteriousness of the musician in the picture, his glasses are covering his eyes which also adds to the effect.

The image also looks like it is a cartoon which adds a futuristic effect. The fact that he is wrapping his hands around what looks like a city, which could possibly be London, is symbolising that he is taking control. It is possibly symbolising that with his music he is able to run the city, he has gained power. Also some may interpret that he is playing "God" with the city, the stars that surround him also add to this godlike effect because he is in the sky. Also you get the impression that he believes he is bigger than everyone else, as he is bigger and towering the city which is in his hands.

However this picture could give the impression that he is protecting the city. Tinies' has a stern face in the picture and strong posture which shows his seriousness about protecting the city. His hand is also clenched into a fist which adds to the effect about how far he would go to protect his city.

Update on our music video

Up to now we have started to edit our video. We have got most of the footage that is going to be included in our project. We have filmed at numerous locations around Hulme, Manchester. We have been able to film quite a lot of performance shots, from various different angles. We have also filmed some hand held tracking shots of Michael and Jermaine performing the song. Michael and Jermaine have found it not too difficult to mime the words of the song.

As the song we have chosen has extremely fast lyrics we believe that the project would look better and more professional if we added more narrative to the video and less performance, although there will be a good amount of performance.

We have now got a little bit more filming to do then we can complete the editing. We have got to film the flashbacks that Jermaine has from when he was a child and when he was stabbed. We are also planning on using the green room to make these flashbacks more realistic. We are going to have Jermaine stood in front of the screen looking back at what has happened to him, and on the screen is going to be the footage we have filmed of his flashback.
